Pause

I will pause to say that I once knew a man who said that he wished to fall
in love because he wished to mark the passage of time--- time glided too
fast for him, empty of memory. He wanted it scarred with incidents, pocked
with depth. He would look back and his life was a large expanse of clear
ice. He had never held the weight of a skater. He had never seen a person
drown. He is not held down by any belief in religion, society or ethics.
He was a highly skilled chemist. One night, as we were drinking, he enumerated
twenty-three ways to commit a perfectly undetectable murder.
One was dusting their food with isotopes.
They would develop throat cancer after several years.
